SUSC Team Selection Guide 2005 - 2008

On February 26, 2001 a Special General Meeting of the Saskatoon United Soccer Club discussed, amended and passed the following Guidelines to be used by the Player Placement Committee in the formation of teams at all levels. From February 2001 until October 2004, the Saskatoon United Soccer Club formed teams based on these established guidelines. These guidelines have served us well over this period and therefore the Executive proposes a similar Guideline for Team Selection for 2005-2008 to be presented to the membership at the Nov 3, 2004 Annual General Meeting.

Note

Due to recent creation of Premier, Gold, Silver, Bronze and House League level designations this document will refer to levels as Top, Second, Third and Fourth Levels in order to facilitate such changes.

Notice of Motion

As of the February 2005 until October 2008 AGM, the Saskatoon United Soccer Club will, in the interest of all members, create teams based on the following Guidelines.

Top Level

There will be one team selected for each age/sex group where possible for the top performance level to be chosen from the top candidates, until SYS develops a policy which will ensure that all zones will enter teams according to a formula based on registration numbers. Top Level tryouts are open to all registrants within that age/sex group and will precede the subsequent level tryouts.
Top Level Coaches may be chosen prior to the final selection from the Coaches Candidate Pool by the Coach Selection Committee, following interviews where necessary. This is to allow the coach to submit a preferred roster of top level players to be considered in the final selection process.

The selection of top level players will not be influenced by age but upon the results of tiering sessions, past Coaching Evaluations, TD Evaluations, Coach Preferred Roster and Player Placement Committee selections. The final selection of a team roster will be made by the Player Placement Committee, Technical Director and the Top Level Coach.

The goal for all Top Level teams will be to create the most competitive team possible for each season.

Second Level

Second Level teams will be determined by the quantity and quality of the remaining players in each age/sex grouping by preseason tiering sessions. Second Level tryouts are open to all registrants except those chosen for Top Level call backs.

The goal for all Second Level teams will be create teams of equal potential in an attempt to give all players the best opportunity for success in each season.

Player placement will be determined from the Second Level tiering results and team selection criteria will focus on the creation of teams according to:

  • Tiering Evaluation Scores/ previous Coach and TD Evaluations.
  • Previous Team Experience (to keep core players together).
  • Registration requests.

Third Level

Third Level teams will be determined by the number of registrants requesting to play at this level or whose abilities were evaluated to be best placed at this level. Players choosing to play at this level do not need to attend tiering evaluations.

The goal for all Third Level teams will focus on skill development, fitness, recreation and learning the game.

Player placement will be determined from the Second Level tiering results and team selection criteria will focus on the creation of teams according to:

  • Tiering Evaluation Scores/ previous Coach and TD Evaluations.
  • Previous Team Experience (to keep core players together).
  • Registration requests to play at this level or have not attended tiering evaluations.

Fourth Level

Fourth Level teams will be determined by the number of registrants requesting to play at this level. Players at this level will not attend tiering evaluations and will be place on teams.

The goal for Fourth Level teams will focus on fitness, recreation and enjoyment of playing the game.

Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers are required to attend separate evaluations focusing on specific goalkeeper skills. Keepers will also be evaluated in game situations during regular age group tryouts for their chosen level. All keepers are encouraged to also participate as “out players” but this remains at the player’s discretion. Any marks derived for a player trying out as a keeper and/or as an out player will be kept separate and the two sets of marks will be used independently of each other to establish the players ability to play within separate positions – out player or keeper. Never shall an average of both position scores be use to place a player. Tiering Scores, Coach Roster and Technical Director recommendations will used to reach final placement level for each prospective keeper.

The Player Selection Committee

The Player Selection Committee will consist of the Technical Coordinator, Technical Director, Registrar and the Technical Assistant for each age group and will determine teams according to the above Guidelines.

Conflict of Interest Guidelines

Conflict of Interest Guidelines will apply when individuals evaluating, selecting coaches or placing players. Conflict of interest is defined as parents and coaches who could be perceived as influencing the decision making process. In their role as age group liaison, Technical Assistants are excused from these guidelines but must always include Technical Coordinator and Technical Director in player placement and team creation.
